Somesh Shanbhag – Business Analyst | Data-Driven Problem Solver | Strategic Thinker

I am an aspiring Business Analyst with a strong foundation in data analysis, stakeholder communication, and digital transformation. My experience spans across roles in consulting, data engineering, and academic projects, where I have consistently translated complex data into actionable business insights.

My journey began as an Analyst all the way up to an associate consultant at a global consulting firm, where I worked on end-to-end data pipeline development using SAP BW/4HANA. This role refined my technical skills and sparked my interest in process driven investigations. using data to aid strategic decision-making.

I’ve also applied my analytical mindset in academic and real-world business challenges. At UTS, I’ve tackled projects involving market equilibrium modeling, private health insurance policy analysis through regression and product perception through conjoint analysis among many many more.

My approach blends technical proficiency in tools like Excel, SAS, and SQL with soft skills like stakeholder interviewing, user journey mapping, and presenting insights to non-technical audiences. I thrive in fast-paced environments and am passionate about driving data-informed solutions that solve real business problems.

I’m now looking to grow in a business analytics or project coordination role in Sydney, where I can continue turning data into value and contribute meaningfully to organizational success.

What I Had to Do: As part of the one-day internship challenge by Tutor10x, I stepped into the role of a Junior Business Analyst, working on a real-world business case for CitiTrails—a growing platform focused on tourism and discovery. After conducting a simulated CEO interview, I identified three strategic KPIs critical to their expansion: revenue growth, app traffic, and AI-enhanced user experience. My objective was to translate these priorities into actionable requirements using tools and approaches reflective of actual industry practices.

Time Frame: The entire experience unfolded within a tight 4-hour window, simulating the fast-paced expectations of the corporate world. With no predefined rubric or guidance, I had to rely on my own judgment, initiative, and analytical skills to deliver a meaningful outcome.

Summary of My Learning: This internship taught me how to ask targeted, high-impact questions to extract maximum insight in minimal time—an essential skill for business analysts. It also taught me the importance of building clear easy to understand well defined processes that can be used to track progress and growth in a company.

Tools & Techniques: I utilized Azure DevOps Boards to map out business needs and convert them into backlog items that reflected project goals and strategic alignment. I also applied user interview frameworks to capture the CEO's vision and translate it into measurable, actionable requirements.

Challenges Faced: The greatest challenge was operating in ambiguity—there were no guardrails or templates. The experience closely mirrored a real-world project kick-off where time is short, expectations are high, and clarity is the analyst’s responsibility.

Summary of My Work: I initiated by creating a DevOps backlog aligned to CitiTrails’ expansion goals. I framed epics and user stories around key insights—such as improving AI-driven decision flows, shifting focus toward brand collaboration, and increasing app traffic. My mock presentation proposed a structured approach to requirements elicitation and solution mapping. I wanted to add Flowlanes for each epic and a detailed dashboard for changes in tickets seen over time but unfortunately I was not able to bring that part of the vision to life due to the time constraints.

Conclusion: This internship wasn’t just a theoretical exercise—it was a crash course in how to think, act, and communicate like a business analyst. It pushed me to apply both technical and soft skills under pressure, and proved that with the right mindset and tools, it’s possible to deliver real business value—even in a single day.
